The 4th annual Dig the Du presented by Hunter Subaru, and 2nd annual Kids Du 2, proudly benefits OpenDoors of Asheville, a nonprofit connecting local children living in poverty with an active, individualized network of support.

Also known as, WNC’s dirty duathlon because it takes place on private, undisturbed land, Dig the Du is not only a good introduction to off-road, multi-sport events, it is also a great venue for seasoned athletes. Participants can register as an individual or as part of a two or three person relay team. The race consists of a 2.5-mile run through grassy fields and forest service roads, a 12-mile off-road bike course, followed by another 2.5-mile trail run. The same run/bike courses return in the 2014 season.

DigTheDu-9144-2154149567-OWhen athletes participate in this race, they are not only competing for handcrafted awards and special ‘sprint’ prizes, they are also contributing to OpenDoors’ Llewellyn Perry Scholarship Fund. Bo, Carol, Lane and Jim Perry donate the use of the Sky Valley Farm for Dig the Du, and are long-time supporters of local youth organizations. The scholarship fund, named for the Perrys’ late grandmother “Lew”, helps pay tuition and tutoring expenses for underprivileged children in the OpenDoors program.

Special race features include: specially designed race tees, congestion-free start area, individual & team registration, bike rentals, unique & private trails, handcrafted awards, and incredible post-race food and Sierra Nevada beer! It’s the perfect event for multi-sport athletes, trail runners, and mountain bikers alike. Mark your calendars, and register now, for Sunday, October 12th, 10:30 am for the 4th annual “Dig the Du” and 1:30 pm for the 2nd annual “Kids du 2″.

We HIGHLY recommend Mountain Bikes instead of Cyclocross bikes for this event!

The Dig the Du, presented by Hunter Subaru, is proud to announce the 2nd annual OpenDoor’s of Asheville’s Kids Du 2 for 2014!

Now younger ones can experience multi sport racing without the danger of adult sized athletes on the course, while learning to enjoy competing in our beautiful mountains! For kids, aged 6 – 13, there will be fun takeaways for kids and food for racers! Kids will be categorized according to skill level: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Course distances will be appropriate for each level.

The Kids Du 2 is a bike/run format, comprised of an updated kids bike course and a revamped duathlon experience, a bike and a run. It is definitely off-road biking and not for kids who have not spent time on trails or off-road, but it is not technical, just rough unimproved logging type road and grass/cross country style. The kids will not be timed, but parents/coaches, you are welcome to time your own competitors if you want splits, etc.! We’ve also made the course more spectator friendly for the 2014 Kids Du 2 Races!

Kids compete on Sunday, October 12th at Sky Valley Farms in Hendersonville, NC!

Kids Du 2, part of the Carolina Kids Multisport Series, is on Sunday, October 12th at 1:30 pm at Sky Valley Farm (private property) in Hendersonville, NC just past DuPont!
