The Special Edition, 2021 Asheville Half Marathon is relocated for one year only to downtown Asheville, North Carolina. The Asheville Marathon & Half will plan to return to Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC for the 10th Annual event in 2022. Participants will help bring the economy roaring back with a safe, organized, fun and city-style running event in downtown Asheville, NC.

Due to COVID-19, guidelines are being put in place to provide a safe and socially distanced event for our runners, volunteers, and staff, which is why the Marathon and Challenge events will not take place at the 2021 event. With only 477 feet of elevation gain and 487 feet of elevation loss, runners will get a short sampling of downtown hills at the beginning and end of the race, but the majority of the miles are ‘flat’ running along the river on the greenway and through the city parks.

Endurance runners will have an opportunity to ‘break in’ the brand new section of the newly completed greenway section of the French Broad River Greenway on Riverside Drive and Lyman Street. This is the first race in downtown Asheville to explore these new greenways during a race.

TESTIMONIALS

I’m a retired Air Force enlisted aircrew member. I’ve visited 80 countries and run in most of them. I currently live in Mount Pleasant, SC but lived in Avl from ‘83-‘02 before relocating to SC. I am so so impressed with the effort you, your staff and the city did in pulling off this amazing event. I’ve been running for 52 years, this was my favorite event.

Half Marathon:

The 2021 edition of the Asheville Half Marathon is relocated for one year only to downtown Asheville. On January 26, 2021, a conditional permit was issued by the City of Asheville for this event to be held in Asheville.

Start your 2021 Asheville Half Marathon in downtown Asheville Pack Square and run through the best parts of the city. Including downtown city streets, River Arts District, along the French Broad river and through the park for this city-style, 13.1 race. This fast, half marathon is a dream come true for runners looking to get a personal best in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

Runners will be on mostly paved surfaces throughout the entirety event with a few dirt sections within the French Broad River Park.

Conditional Permit has been approved by the City of Asheville.

Elevation

The 2021 Asheville Half Marthon elevation is ONLY 477 feet of elevation gain and has 487 feet of elevation loss. We could be wrong… but we believe that this course has to be one of the fastest, flattest half marathon races to ever exist in the notoriously hilly downtown Asheville area. The highest incline (at the end of the race) is 7.8% and the steepest downhill is -8% grade.

Water Stations

We will provide refreshments along the course, but do encourage you to bring your own fuel, nutrition and refreshments so that you can stay socially-distanced throughout the entire event. Gatorade, Water, Energy Gels and CLIF Bars will be provided. Green Moose Fuel will be handing out free gels at each water station, find more about them here: https://greenmoosefuel.com/

Due to COVID-19 we are unable to provide fruit and unpackaged food at the water station. Each water station will have portajons with hand sanitizer nearby. Check course map for exact locations.

Restrooms on the Course

On the race map the following areas are highlighted with icons on the route.

Restrooms - on the race map.

  • Mile 2.5 + 10.5 - River Arts District Public Restrooms

  • Mile 3 + 10 - Wedge at Foundation + 12 Bones have restrooms (will open at 11am)

Spectators

This half marathon has been designed with your family and friends in mind! We have several spots along the course that we have designated spectator stations. Costumes, fun signs and lots of great energy and encouragement is a must! Limited parking is available at these spots. All spectators are required to social distance and wear a face covering.  Check course map for exact locations.

This is a very spectator friendly course. There are soo many great areas to spread out and safely watch the race. But we will list some of our favorites and you can see these on the race map with the CAMERA icon. Spread out, no big groups allowed, please stay 6 feet apart, wear a mask!

No spectators allowed in the start/finish areas or in Pack Square so we can adhere to the gathering restrictions in NC. Please go cheer/spectate on the course!

  • Mile 1 and 12 ½ - Aston Park

  • Asheville Riverfront Parks - multiple large parking lots and areas and street parking available, here are some of the locations on the new Greenway and on the course:
    • Mile 2 and 11 - NC Wildlife Resources Commission (this is the start of the new Greenway)

    • Mile 2.5 and 10 - Jean Webb Park

    • Mile 3 + 10 - Wedge at Foundation, 12 Bones and Summit Coffee - great spot to get yummy treats while you cheer on your friends!

THINGS TO DO

FOUNDY STREET

Foundy Street is a collective of variously talented misfits who came together into a central location of abandoned property that had been home to Asheville’s underground gala. We cleaned up and turned the lights back on, and invited our friends to call the space home to their studios, passions and crafts. Today, Foundy Street is home to Asheville’s River Arts District central community, filled with an abundance of things to do.

Our Post Race Party will be at the Wedge at the Foundation!

See More of what Foundy Street has to offer

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most popular sections of the National Park System. Named “America’s Favorite Drive,” the 469-mile scenic road, offers stunning vistas, hiking and cycling opportunities. Split-rail fences, old farmsteads, mountain meadows and scenic overlooks with endless vistas make the Blue Ridge Parkway a popular attraction. The Parkway incorporates numerous campgrounds, picnic areas and trails.

Looking Glass Rock, less than an hour from Asheville, is probably the best-known rock climbing area in the state. It offers friction and face climbing of a 500-foot rocky face mountain. No permit required.

There are a few places in the world that still stand apart from the ordinary. Rising more than a mile high, Mount Mitchell State Park is one of these extraordinary places. In the crest of the Black Mountains lies the summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi.

BILTMORE ESTATE

There is plenty to explore at Biltmore Estate! Take a tour of the House, stroll through the gardens, explore the trails, hang out in Antler Hill Village, or even check out the winery for a wine tasting.

SHOPPING

Historic Biltmore Village today is truly one of the South’s most unique touring and shopping environments. Because of its history, its range of unique independent, locally-owned retailers, and its fine restaurants, Historic Biltmore Village has an international reputation.

Asheville’s Grove Arcade offers boutique shopping, unique dining and regional crafts in a downtown architectural wonder. The building is open daily and features an outdoor portico market. A downloadable building tour is available on the website. Each of these offers a uniquely Asheville experience.

THE ARTS

There are several art districts in Asheville, and each provides visitors with richly diverse experiences. In the Downtown Asheville Art District, for example, more than 20 galleries within easy walking distance of one another feature a wide variety of fine art and studio crafts created by local, regional, national and international artists. The River Arts District, filled with dozens of working art studios, is one of Asheville’s unique arts neighborhoods. Asheville’s performing arts alliance also thrives.

DOWNTOWN ASHEVILLE

The Asheville Urban Trail has often been called Asheville’s “museum without walls.” Started by a small group of citizens interested in helping revitalize downtown, the Urban Trail consists of thirty stations of bronze sculpture around downtown. Each station has a plaque illuminating some of the very interesting history of downtown’s development and the various notable people who once lived here. Mostly local artists helped to create the whimsical bronze sculptures and other art works that are found at each station. The tour is a 1.7 mile walk that begins and ends at Pack Place and takes about two hours to complete in its entirety.

  • Coordinated social distancing at the start line, with wave starts.
  • All staff/volunteers are required to wear a face-covering during the duration of the event.
  • Participants are required to wear a face-covering until the event starts and then put it back on after they are finished running/walking in the event. If at any time a participant is within 6 feet of another person, they are required to put on a face covering.

  • As we all know the pandemic changes things quickly! We ask that you be flexible and patient as we may have to adjust things for this event up until the event takes place. Please know we are doing our absolute best and want this event to happen as much as you do! In the event that the U.S. or NC government, Buncombe County or City of Asheville declares a new stay-at-home order or places new restrictions on gatherings and we are not able to have the in-person event, all ‘in-person’  event registrations will automatically be converted to the Virtual event.

Deferral, transfer & refund Policies

Above all else, we are striving to make this event as safe as it can possibly be for all our participants, volunteers, and staff. If you’re feeling unwell (or uncomfortable participating), we want you to be able to stay home, stay safe, and join us next year without feeling like you’re losing out. In order to make that happen, we are offering flexible options so participants can make responsible decisions based on their health.

INCLEMENT WEATHER DAY: SUNDAY MARCH 21

Here are our options for registered participants who can’t make it to the race:

DEFERRALS: Anyone can defer their entry to the 2022 event at any point before Sunday, March 7th at midnight. There is a $25 deferral processing fee. To complete your deferral, select the option from our race store. Any requests after that date will not be able to be honored. If you choose this option you would be withdrawing from the event and would not be able to receive your swag or finisher medal.

TRANSFER FROM IN-PERSON TO VIRTUAL: You can transfer your in-person registration to a virtual registration for free at any point before the start of the race (Saturday, March 20th at 7am).

REFUNDS: We are opening registration at the end of January 2021, approximately 7 weeks away from the race. Due to the event taking place within such a short period of time, we will not be able to provide refunds in the unlikely cancellation of the event. Registration for the event waives your right to any refunds.

CANCELLATION: As we all know, the pandemic changes things quickly! We ask that you be flexible and patient as we may have to adjust things for this event up until the event takes place. In the event that the U.S. or NC government, Buncombe County or City of Asheville declares a new stay-at-home order and we are not able to have the in person event, all ‘in person’ event registrations will automatically be converted to the Virtual Event, with a possibility of ‘self-serve’ virtual option. If there are new limits on gathering restrictions set forth by the state of NC, we will adjust the wave start times to accommodate this limit and proceed with the event if possible. If the race gets switched to a virtual event you will receive a discount code coupon for the 2022 event, free transfer into the Virtual Event, and your swag (shirt + medal). These items can be picked up locally or mailed for free if you are from out of town.

CHARITY PARTNERS

During registration, runners will have a chance to donate to these charities. We will also be holding a shoe drive for WNCRM, Runners are encouraged to bring their used or gently worn shoes to packet pickup or to the start line on race day!

SHOE DRIVE FOR WCRM

Runners - we know you have those slightly worn shoes in the back of your closet! What better way to put them to use than giving them to people who are in need! We will have an area to collect gently used shoes at the drive-thru packet pick-up and at the start line in Pack Square.

VOLUNTEER

To protect our participants and practice social distancing, we will not allow spectators in the event village area or race hub. If you would like to sign up to help along the course as a volunteer or in the event village, this will be a great way for you to support and cheer on your friends and family members! Volunteers will get a special swag item from iDaph events.
