The Lung Buster Time Trial Series is a seven-part competitive time trial racing series of cycling events in Western North Carolina held with the intent of providing all participants a professional racer experience, no matter how fast you are. All levels and abilities of cyclists are invited to participate!

The 2017 series includes four flat & fast out-and-back courses, two are 20k or 40k routes along Riverside Drive between Marshall and Asheville and two are 20k courses on Etowah River Road. **New to 2017 is the addition of Age Group Categories AND Team Time Trials. Teams can consist of 2-4 participants. You may participate in individual and Team TT in the same day. Team members will be scored based on their individual time, then average between the team members. The fastest team wins!**

Three time trials are one-way, very challenging, hill climbs — one up the punishing Elk Mountain outside of Asheville, the other hill climb is a Gravel Grinder Time Trial in Black Mountain at the Quarry. *** Our Newest Time Trial, Climb Jump off Rock will take place on Sunday, May 28th and is a BONUS time trial. This event will be in Laurel Park and will consist of an approx 5-6 mile hill climb that is sure to test your lung capacity while offering rewarding views from the finish line.

Top male and female finishers for the new Jump off Rock Hill Climb, Elk Mountain and the Climb the Quarry will receive a special edition, Lung Buster Series Hincapie polka dot jersey for King of the Mountain and Queen of the Mountain. Polka Dot Jerseys are awarded to the FASTEST MALE and FEMALE at the Hill Climbs, regardless of the bike division/category that they register in.

To be eligible in the Lung Buster Time Trial Series Awards and Prizes you must participate in 5 out of the 7 time trials.

Team Time Trial:
1. Hill Climb Team Time Trial option: Jump Off Rock Time Trial, Elk Mountain and Grovestone/Quarry TT. Each participant on the team will be scored for their solo ride and part of the team… 2, 3 or 4 person team times will be averaged for their overall placement. For series points and prizes the teams will get points based on their placement.

2. Flat Team Time Trial Option: Etowah and Asheville/Riverside Drive TTs: Teams of 2, 3 or 4 will work together to get to the finish line the fastest. The last person on the team will be the Finish Time for the team.  This team option for the Flat time trial is $15 additional if you are also participating individually or $25 per person per team. For series points and prizes the teams will get points based on their placement.

Our unique mix of different racing environments allows riders of different strengths and focuses to level the playing field amongst competitors. Also, having five separate events means that one poor showing won’t decimate your opportunity to do well in the series as a whole. So as to not leave out any cyclist: whether you’re an elite time trailer or a recreational rider on your road bike wanting to prove your merit in our Merckx/Standard division we provide both categories.

Lung Buster: The very name embodies pushing one’s mind and body to its aerobic limits. And that’s exactly what we expect to see. This series is a great test for participants of all abilities, and a great way to gauge your standing and progress in your cycling endeavors. With awards, medals, cash, bragging rights, and course records all on the line, you better not leave your inner competitor at home! With the kinds of hard efforts and fast times we’ve seen in the Lung Buster Series over the years, we feel that such braggadocio is warranted, and expect 2017 to bring an abundance of the same.

Thanks for putting on this event. I found it very easy to sign up, and the folks working the course were very helpful and pleasant. I live near this course and can ride it “for free” but found the event, timing equipment, workers, other riders, and the “occasion” of it all well worth the reasonable entry fee – not even including the surprise can of beer at the finish! I’ll be back for more (idaph events, with or without beer)

Jump Off Rock Time Trial - This was a super enjoyable event and so much less pressure than I have experienced at other events. Thanks to Mike from Liberty Bicycles for the seat hold and thanks to the neighborhoods for being so welcoming. Above all, thanks to the organizers for putting together a great climb!

Kyle Kuykendall

Jump Off Rock Time Trial - We all enjoy taking the time to share our beautiful Town. I am very happy with the turn out and we all had lots of fun! I have a couple of Officers that are now wanting to train to participate in future bike events. We just re-implemented our Patrol Bike Team; it has really been a great way to build the bridge with cyclist and Town residents.

FAQs

Who can participate? Cyclists and Triathletes of all abilities! Don’t have a time trial bike? No problem, we have a Merckx/Standard division, which allows you to use your road bike! Time trials are a safe way for experienced & recreational cyclists to measure their fitness level and progress. It’s also a great way for triathletes to sharpen their bike skills. If you enjoy riding and want to set your own personal record, give a time trial a try!

Do you have to have a USAC license to participate? No, we have opted not have the LBTT be USAC sanctioned events this year. This makes the events more affordable for any and all types of cyclists to participate, not just racers. In addition, only mass start races count for upgrade points with USAC thus defeating the purpose of cyclists participating for the sole purpose of getting points to upgrade.

In order to get series points to qualify for end of season prizes do I have to register in the same category the entire season? Yes, you may register for either the TT or Merckx division at any race you so desire, but you must stay in the same category the entire series in order to qualify for prizes. (For example, a Master’s 50+ rider that registers in that category for the first race would need to stay in that category for the rest of the season.)

Do my time trials count towards moving me into a new cycling category? As far as the upgrades, TT’s do not count, only mass start races.

How are the Team Time Trials timed and scored?

Team Time Trial:
1. Hill Climb Team Time Trial option: Jump Off Rock Time Trial, Elk Mountain and Grovestone/Quarry TT. Each participant on the team will be scored for their solo ride and part of the team… 2, 3 or 4 person team times will be averaged for their overall placement. This team option for the hill climb time trial it is $5 additional at the Hill Climbs.

If one person on our team has an Aero bike, which category will we participate in? If one person has an Aero bike, your whole team will be placed in the Aero/TT category. If all cyclists on the team have a road bike you will be in the Merckx category.
