The holidays are just around the corner and along with it comes the stress of figuring out gifts for everyone on your list. Have you ever considered giving the gift of an experience? I know we tend to think that gifts should be tangible, physical items but the gift of an experience is the kind of gift that keeps on giving.

How do experiences make us happier?

Prof. Thomas Gilovich, psychologist at the University of Cornell, says that experiences make us much happier than material possessions: “People often think spending money on an experience is not as wise an investment as spending it on a material possession. They think the experience will come and go in a flash, and they’ll be left with little compared to owning an item. But in reality we remember experiences long afterward, while we soon become used to our possessions. At the same time, we also enjoy the anticipation of having an experience more than the anticipation of owning a possession.”

Think about it - experiences last longer. We spend time anticipating the experience. We get to enjoy the experience. AND we get share the experience with people during the experience. Not only that, but people want to hear about the experience after the fact. An experience is the type of gift that keeps on giving and you get the chance to share in the joy and excitement of experiencing it with your friends and/or loved ones. Nothing is more valuable than spending time with family and friends.
