EVENT GUIDE: Light Up the Night 5k

Start Time: anytime between 7:30pm-7:45pm!

Welcome to the 4th Annual Light Up the Night 5K at Carrier Park in Asheville, NC on Friday, August 5th!! We are so grateful for the support we have from YOU and Western Carolina Rescue Ministries. Please read this email in its entirety so you are ready for race day!

The LUTN has implemented rolling Wave Starts from 7:30-7:45pm for this event on Friday evening. This allows the start and the race course to not be congested. If you are a runner in contention to win overall or an age group award, we encourage you to start promptly at 7:30pm.   The start line is located at the far outer side of the Mellowdrome, close to the lawn bowling and main parking lots.

Please note: THE COURSE IS CLOSED AT 8:30 PM. Please self-adjust your start time if you need more time to complete your walk/run so that you can be finished by the time the course closes.

Parking is available at all the parking lots at Carrier Park. The park is open to the public during the event so there will be locals in our community also using the parking lots, greenways, trails and park during the event.

Packet Pickup will take place at the Carrier Park picnic shelter from 6pm-7:30pm on event day. Please arrive early enough to pick up your race number, shirt, glow swag and take your goody bag back to your car (if need be).

We have glow goodies, glow paint and more fun in store at the picnic shelter for you when you check-in!

You will receive a race number with a timing chip on the back of the number. Please do not BEND your race bib. The race number is to be put on the front of your shirt and must be visible when crossing both timing mats at the start and the finish line.

Bring some CASH! We’ll also be selling vintage Light up the Night shirts at the event!

There park restrooms open and available at Carrier Park and there will be a couple portajons in the parking lot near the picnic shelter.

Carrier Park is a beautiful park in the heart of Asheville, NC.  The course is flat and fast with very little elevation gain throughout. Participants will get to enjoy the beautiful French Broad Greenway at Carrier Park. Surfaces include wooded trails with hard packed dirt, paved Greenway and dirt paths.

The park is open to the public during the event. We will ask folks to stay to the right and call out when passing while they are participating in the event. Please be courteous to the locals that are walking, jogging and biking at the park during the event.

Keep in mind on August 5th, dusk is at 9:00pm. Participants that are finishing at the course closing time of 8:30pm, should be prepared to bring their own flashlight and/or headlamp to participate. Since we are at the park and there are limited street lamps, it will be dark! Neon tees, light up items, glow in the dark accessories, light up vests and other glow swag are all encouraged! BRING IT ON! All in person, registered participants can get glow sticks, bracelets or necklaces at packet pickup!

The course will be marked with PINK Route Arrow Stickers on the paved parts of the Greenway and Yard Signs along the way. We will have Volunteers at some of the key intersections but it is UP TO YOU to know the course. We highly suggest that you check out the course ahead of race day and/or download the race map on your phone/watch/GPS device when you participate on race. Since folks are starting at all different times you will NOT BE able to rely on ‘following’ people during your race.

There is one water station along the course at the turnaround.

  • The start and finish line are in two separate locations and will be marked with a START Feather Banner and a FINISH Feather Banner.
  • The start line is close to the billboard beside the back of the Mellowdrome near the lawn bowling area. The finish line is near the picnic shelter.
  • Before and after you are finished racing DO NOT Cross back over or get near any of the timing mats or your time will get messed up.

Online results will be available LIVE throughout the race HERE.

Awards will be given out after the event, although there will not be a formal ceremony. Once the results are finalized, we will begin handing out awards at the registration tent at the awards ceremony at approximately 8:45pm. If we have plenty of finishers and results in before this time, we may start the award ceremony earlier.

If you are an award winner but can’t stay afterwards, you can pick it up at Fleet Feet Asheville starting on Tuesday,  August 9th after 3:00 PM. The awards will be available all week after that.
