Running of the Goats 5K & Nature Walk

Running of the Goats 5K & Nature Walk

Are you ready to run wild with the WNC Nature Center?! Join us for the first-ever Running of the Goats 5k and Nature Walk to support the animals you love!

1. Choose to run or walk the 3.1 mile course, which starts and ends at the WNC Nature Center. Begin your journey by catching a glimpse of the goats, bears, birds, and otters before heading out on a rolling, paved course.

2. Opt to walk only* inside the Nature Center along a paved route and see more animals waking up to start their day. Your self-guided tour will include fun, nature-related prompts and activities along the path. *In order to ensure the comfort of our animals, running is not permitted during the Nature Walk.

3. Participate at any time in any location with the virtual option.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll receive a race shirt (if registered by 4/11 at midnight) and a free guest pass to visit the Nature Center in the future. Nature Center goats Roddy and Rolo, Swiss and Alpine, and Bill and Ted will be cheering you on as you race to be the Greatest Of All Time!

Virtual or In-Person the First Annual “Tot Trot 5K” supports two local Non-Profits - KARE and Hope for Horses. This inaugural event will be unique as two local non-profits partner to raise awareness of their organizations and their causes; Child Abuse and Animal Abuse. April is Child Abuse Awareness month as well as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.

THE TOT - KARE, the Robert Forga Family Kare House, a 501(c)(3) founded in 1991, is dedicated to preventing child abuse and advocating for children who have been physically or sexually abused. KARE is a nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in good standing with the National Children’s Alliance and is a Prevent Child Abuse affiliate. Their primary job is to advocate for victims, but also believe that proper education will lead to abuse prevention. Annually, KARE serves approximately 200 children through the Victim Advocacy program. They also serve approximately 30 families through the Positive Parenting program.

THE TROT - Hope for Horses is a 501(c)(3) horse rescue founded in 1999. Their primary goal is to find quality homes for many unwanted, neglected, and abused horses. They also provide sanctuary for equines that cannot be adopted due to health, behavioral, or other reasons. Additionally, they are committed to helping responsible horse owners keep and care for their horses. Hope for Horses has successfully helped hundreds of horses throughout Western North Carolina.

THE TOWN - This race is in partnership with the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department and we hope to promote and provide information about the future Greenway Project. The overall purpose of this greenway trail is to connect to Lake Junaluska and to provide an alternative transportation option that links businesses, schools, recreation areas, and residential communities. The greenway serves as an outdoor classroom for local schools and offers educational opportunities to help the public understand and appreciate the environmental aspects of the corridor.

Biltmore-Kiwanis-Classic-Race-Biltmore-HouseThe 15K begins at the Winery, climbs to Deerpark Restaurant.  Following is an undulating descent and rise along the main road to Biltmore House, where runners will loop in front of the massive main entrance doors. Next, runners will enter the Walled Garden, pass by the Azalea Garden and lagoon along the French Broad River, and then kick to the finish on their return to the Winery. The first half of the course has a challenging duo of hills, while the fast final half covers downhill to flat terrain. The 5K course will be a flat, out and back course starting at the Winery and paralleling the French Broad River where a hard pace can be set from gun to tape.
The race will directly benefit a great local organization dedicated to meeting the needs of our surrounding community. Competing in this event you will be helping fund the efforts of Kiwanis Children’s Charities in their efforts to support local youth programs. Among these, our Asheville Chapter Kiwanis Club provides book bags filled with school supplies each fall to children in need to set them off right for the new school year. Promoting attendance and punctuality in local elementary schools, the club also gives away a bicycle each quarter through a drawing to children with perfect attendance and punctuality.
