The 9th Annual Asheville Marathon and Half typically held at Biltmore Estate, will take place as a Half Marathon only on Saturday, March 20, 2021 in downtown Asheville. The Special Edition, 2021 Asheville Half Marathon is relocated for one year only to downtown Asheville, North Carolina. The Asheville Marathon & Half will plan to return to Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC for the 10th Annual event in 2022. Participants will help bring the economy roaring back with a safe, organized, fun and city-style running event in downtown Asheville, NC.

Due to COVID-19, guidelines are being put in place to provide a safe and socially distanced event for our runners, volunteers, and staff, which is why the Marathon and Challenge events will not take place at the 2021 event. The event is capped at 800 participants and will include wave starts. We expect this event to sell out before race day.

Registration will open on Thursday, January 27th for the 2020 participants and then will open on January 28th to the general public.

Start your 2021 Asheville Half Marathon in downtown Asheville Pack Square and run through the best parts of the city. Including downtown city streets, River Arts District, along the French Broad river and through the park for this city-style, 13.1 race. This fast, half marathon is a dream come true for runners looking to get a personal best in the mountains of Western North Carolina. With only 477 feet of elevation gain and 487 feet of elevation loss, runners will get a short sampling of downtown hills at the beginning and end of the race, but the majority of the miles are ‘flat’ running along the river on the greenway and through the city parks.

Endurance runners will have an opportunity to ‘break in’ the brand new section of the newly completed greenway section of the French Broad River Greenway on Riverside Drive and Lyman Street. This is the first race in downtown Asheville to explore these new greenways during a race.

Runners will be on mostly paved surfaces throughout the entirety event with a few dirt sections within the French Broad River Park.

2020 Asheville Off Road Series: We will see you in 2021

2020 Asheville Off Road Series: We will see you in 2021

John Smith and Connor Smith with masks on at Asheville Triathlon

The Asheville Off Road Series at Biltmore Estate is a unique, challenging event that has grown into a local and regional favorite over the years. Our 2019 event was our biggest event to date, and we were anticipating an even bigger number in 2020. We were looking forward to having another day of Gravel Grinder, 10K and Duathlon events, and sharing the excitement of racing with our participants.

The world had other plans, however.

We shut down registration for the 2020 Asheville Off Road Series in March due to COVID-19, and since that time we have been working behind the scenes with Biltmore Estate to make the event possible in some capacity. When we knew we were close to coming to a final event plan with Biltmore Estate, we sent out a survey to all of our participants to gauge community interest. We noted that there would be some major changes to the event, such as the deletion of the duathlon, staggered start times, wave starts, and other safety guidelines we would put in place to encourage social distancing.

Although the response to the survey was mostly positive and encouraging, we did not feel there were enough responses to ensure we would have the necessary number of participants for this year’s event.

Therefore, it is with heavy hearts that we are foregoing the 2020 Asheville Off Road Series this year and will instead plan for a completely epic event in 2021. With 40 percent of our participants not feeling comfortable at this time to attend an in-person event — AND with September being saturated with scheduled events already — we have opted to cancel the 2020 event completely. We are taking the safety of our participants very seriously, and although we could have this event in a safe and socially distanced way, given the survey results it would not be a viable option for our small business.

We are offering our current registrations the option to defer their registration to the 2021 event, to donate their registration costs to the iDream Athlete’s Foundation, or to receive a refund.

Registrants must submit a formal decision by August 31st at midnight by selecting one of the options in the link below. All responses must be submitted using the options in the link, and any other form of response (phone calls, emails, Facebook comments, etc) will be directed back to this page to make a selection.

If you do not respond by August 31st at midnight, your registration cost will automatically be donated to the iDream Athlete’s Foundation.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding. As we continue to evolve with the changing times, your continued involvement in our future events is more important than ever. Please stay tuned for other upcoming events this year by following our Facebook and Instagram pages, and updates on our websites. We hope everyone stays safe and continues to MOVE FORWARD in their athletic training and goals.

Asheville Half Marathon voted best half marathon in North Carolina

Asheville Half Marathon voted best half marathon in North Carolina

The Asheville Half Marathon at Biltmore Estate recognized as Best Half Marathon in North Carolina

The results are in! We are super excited to announce that the Asheville Half Marathon at Biltmore Estate has been recognized by RaceRaves as the top half marathon in North Carolina.

RaceRaves, the leading online race finder and reviews community for runners of all levels, has announced the winners of its “Runners Choice: Best Half Marathons in the U.S.” poll. The top race in each state was crowned based on votes from thousands of runners across the country.

Common themes among the winning events include exceptional production and on-course support, strong community involvement, and a course that showcases the beauty and attractions of the local region.

Due to the popular demand of the half marathon distance, Race Director Daphne Kirkwood, added the 13.1 event to the Asheville Marathon in 2014. The half marathon is a perfect distance for busy runners to stay motivated through the winter months to run and to be able to train for and accomplish as a spring race goal.

“This boutique style half marathon event is purposefully limited in participant size, so we can spoil all our runners with a fantastic, memorable running experience,” says Daphne. “What a gift to show up at this event in March (after months of training in the winter months) and get to run entirely on the private estate at Biltmore! It is an unforgettable experience and we are honored to have been named the Best Half Marathon in the State of North Carolina.”

About the Asheville Half MarathonSituated on nearly 7,000 acres of private land in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Biltmore Estate is the perfect venue for a “unique, picturesque” half marathon. Run entirely on Estate grounds, the mostly paved and moderately hilly course guides runners past manicured gardens, through hardwood forests and along the French Broad River culminating with a visit to Biltmore House, the centerpiece of Biltmore Estate and, with four acres of floor space and 250 rooms, the largest privately owned home in the United States.

Asheville is a course so nice, you’ll want to run it twice — and you can with the Backyard to Backyard Challenge, in which runners complete the half marathon course on both Saturday and Sunday to earn bragging rights and exclusive swag.

This initiative exemplifies our passion and commitment to help runners discover the best races across the country,” said RaceRaves Co-founder Mike Sohaskey. “We’re fired up by the enthusiastic response from runners nationwide, and we congratulate the Asheville Half Marathon on this well-deserved accolade.”

The complete list of winning half marathons by state is available on RaceRaves.com.
