What’s it like to ride the Gravel Grinder?

We get a lot of questions about what the Gravel Grinder is like to ride. Here longtime cyclist and Asheville local Billy McCracken talks about the course, which is part asphalt, mostly gravel, and not too much elevation gain. This event takes place on the West side of Biltmore Estate. Video Credit: Wright Creative, Inc.

Asheville Off-Road Series to feature strong local athletes

Asheville Off-Road Series to feature strong local athletes

Ginna Lee Reid and Billy McCracken are gearing up for the upcoming multi-sport event at Biltmore Estate

Two of Asheville’s well-known, uber-athletes, Ginna Reid (runner) and Billy McCracken (cyclist) will be challenging themselves at the upcoming Asheville Off Road Series at Biltmore Estate on September 15th.  Ginna will be crushing the Asheville Off Road 10K in September as part of our Asheville Off-Road Series, and Billy will put the hammer down once again in Asheville’s only Gravel Grinder bike events. We are thrilled to have these superstars, Ginna and Billy, part of our event in September. They both shine so bright in our community, and we are appreciate Keith Wright, owner of Wright Creative, Inc., who helped us with this special feature of two of Asheville’s finest athletes.

Ginna is a local competitive runner who is part of the Asheville Running Collective (ARC), and she is a huge advocate of running. ARC is a USATF-certified, post-collegiate racing team made up of competitive runners living in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Their goal is to continue supporting the sport of competitive distance running in WNC by supporting its members in achieving their running goals in a positive team environment.

Billy is part of the VeloSports Racing Team in Asheville, which is a group of cyclists whose goal is to grow cycling in Western North Carolina. They have organized the 2016 USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships, three different charity rides, and volunteered at numerous events, including the 2016 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships.

Join our event and cheer them on!

The Asheville Off-Road Series takes place Sunday, September 15th at the Biltmore Estate, and is a multi-sport event, so there’s something for everyone. We welcome all types of athletes, from beginners to experts. Some of our runners and cyclists go hard and fast, while others take their time to enjoy the beautiful views surrounding their race day experience.

There will be three events that day:

  • Duathlon (Run/Bike/Run)
  • 10K
  • Gravel Grinder (20, 40, 60 mile options)

Relay teams are available! The free t-shirt deadline is coming up on Saturday, August 30th at midnight. The t-shirts are super comfy and stylish, so if you’re planning on participating, now is a great time to sign up and get a free tee!

Prices for this event increase on Thursday, September 5th.

We hope you can come and join us for this fun and challenging event at Biltmore Estate. Every participant will receive a free beverage from Oskar Blues Brewery, and there will be cash prizes given for the 40 Mile Gravel Grinder.

Bike Fast. Get the Cash.

How fast can you grind through the Gravel Grinder? Asheville Bicycle Company is giving away cash prizes for this year’s 40 mile Gravel Grinder at the Asheville Off Road Series. Prizes will be given to male and female overall winners and masters winners.

“If we can make more people happy, the better,” says owner Craig Friedrich.

Craig started selling bicycles in 1993 and has been owner and partner of Asheville Bicycle Company and Ski Country for almost 30 years. He grew up road biking and mountain biking, and has spent most of his life riding Asheville’s scenic roads and mountain bike trails. He became involved with the Asheville Off Road Series through Biltmore Estate several years ago.

“They (Biltmore) asked me to produce a bike race,” Craig explains. “In doing so…after some exploration work, I met Daphne through the Kiwanis run…and it was pretty obvious that with the size and scale Biltmore wanted for this event…I asked her to do it. She’s just so damn good at everything she does.”

Asheville Bicycle Company is now one of the main sponsors of the event and has been since its inception. They provide bike mechanics on the West side of the Biltmore Estate for anyone having issues on the trail, and at the start of the race for any last minute repairs and to top off air.

This will be the first year Asheville Bicycle will be offering cash prizes for the 40 mile Gravel Grinder. Craig hopes the prizes will continue to draw more participants and build momentum for this multi-sport event.

“This event does bring a lot of extra income into the community: Lodging, food and beverage. It’s not just good for Asheville, it’s also good for the cycling industry,” says Craig. “It highlights Asheville’s charms on what the riding community offers - the access we have, and the beauty of Asheville and Biltmore Estate.”

The Gravel Grinder - part of the Asheville Off-Road Series - takes place on Sunday, September 15th. There are 20, 40, and 60 mile options for this event.

The event also offers a Duathlon and 10K that same day. Relay teams are an option when you sign up. Prices increase September 5th!

For the French aristocrat in all of us, this rough-cut, crown-emerald of a race sweeps participants through a mystical journey, back to a time, when the estate might have resembled an 15th century countryside plantation, complete with a game-stocked forest, working vineyards, and a cold mountain river rushing by. Racers on this day will be lords of the land they claim under fast plowing feet & spokes.

The Asheville off-road series of multi-sport events at Biltmore Estate consists of 3 main events, each come with various privileges for participation.

All three of the off-road events in September are entirely on the historic grounds of the Biltmore Estate property. The Asheville Duathlon and Gravel Grinder events both get to explore the west side of Biltmore Estate, which is typically off-limits to guests. Join endurance athletes of all abilities and step to the start line, hearts booming in anticipation, to challenge mind and body while competing in the Annual Multi-Sport event series held at Biltmore Estate.

Event is limited to 750 spots. We expect the 6th Annual Event to sell out prior to race day! Sign up as an individual, or a 2—3 person relay team for the AVL Duathlon.
