Introducing the NEW 2018 WNC Race Series!
The WNC Race Series includes multiple events throughout 2018, participants will need to complete 4 events to be eligible for the series, with additional opportunities to earn points including volunteering and participating in the Winter Bike League and the Asheville Swim League. We will have an end of year celebration for participants with awards for top 3 in Age Groups. Age Groups are broken up into four categories:
- Gazelles: 25 & Under
- Cheetahs: 26-39
- Whippets: 40-55
- Foxes: 56 & Over
Participants must complete a registration form to be eligible for the series. All participants will receive Bragging Rights, Gift Certificates and SWAG at our End of Year Celebration! Join in the fun and be a part of the Inaugural 2018 WNC Race Series!
Want to see the series standings? Just click the button above. We will update them after each race. Contact us for any corrections. We try and combine all your times for multiple races (under your name) but we may (and will) miss some. So if you see your name listed twice, simply email us and we will correct it. The scoring is simple. The age groups for the WNC Race Series are Gazelles: 25 & Under, Cheetahs: 26-39, Whippets: 40-55, and Foxes: 56 & Over. You will earn age group points in these age groups for each race you participate. The points are
- 1st – 50 points
- 2nd – 45 points
- 3rd – 40 points
- 4th – 35 points
- 5th – 30 points
- 6th – 25 points
- 7th – 20 points
- 8th – 15 points
- 9th – 10 points
- 10th – 5 points
- participation – 50 points
Please note the age groups (at each race) are defined by that race and may not follow the WNC Race Series age groups. For example the LPC Triathlon may have age groups 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+ and give their awards based on their age groups. However, the WNC Race Series ignores the age groups defined by each race and you are earning WNC Race Series points in the WNC Race Series age groups Gazelles: 25 & Under, Cheetahs: 26-39, Whippets: 40-55, and Foxes: 56 & Over. We have kept the minimum # of races at FOUR. You can win your age group by participating in 4 WNC Race Series events. We will score your best 6. Confused? …don’t be. Here is the scoop. To win an award you must run 4. You can run all the races but we will score your best 6.
- Run 3 races… sorry out of luck. Can’t win an award
- Run 4 races… you can win an award. We will score all 4 races
- Run 5 races… you can win an award. We will score all 5 races
- Run 6 races… you can win an award. We will score all 6 races
- Run 7 races… you can win an award. We will score your top 6 races
- Run all the races… Congrats you are a beast. We will still only score your top 6 races.
Your age group is defined for ALL races in the GRS based on your age as of the end of the year. That means that the age group you will be competing in is your age as of the last day of the year. Remember this when you look at race results from the GRS races. Someone may be in the 30-34 age group at a specific race but for GRS they may be in 35-39 age group (thus taking away your valuable points… darn that rule!)
In the case of a tie the highest average points per-event will be used to break the tie. For example, if one runner has 100 points and has participated in 5 races (20pts per race average) and another runner has 100 points but has participated in 7 races (14 pts per race average) the runner with the highest average will be declared the winner. If two runners have the same number of points and the same average, a head-to-head tie breaker will be used to declare the winner (whoever won the most head to head races). If each runner is still tied then the LAST race in the year in which BOTH runners participated will be used to decide the head-to-head tie breaker. For example if both runners participate in the Asheville Marathon & Half the runner winning the head to head competition will be declared the winner. If two runner are tied and did not complete head to head against each other, then the runner who finished the latest race in the calendar will be the winner.
The best part is getting free stuff and we have plenty. Top 3 in their age groups will get some great awards. All participants will receive a race series beanie.
Want to earn extra points but can’t race? Volunteer at one of our events to earn 50 points towards your overall series standings. You must complete 4 races to be eligible for series awards but volunteering can count as additional points for races 5 and/or 6. We will have a special prize for our Volunteer of the Year.
