Blue Ridge Bicycle Club’s 20th Annual WNC Flyer presented by Hunter Subaru is a renowned cycling event that showcases the breathtaking natural beauty of the Western North Carolina region. Cyclists from all around gather to participate in this annual ride, which offers four different routes. Whether you're an avid cyclist seeking a challenging endurance course or a leisure rider just looking to soak in the stunning landscapes, the WNC Flyer has something to suit your riding style. After the ride, the party is at Oskar Blues where they enjoy live music from Blue Ridge Tradition band, local BBQ and craft beer.

This event is brought to you by the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club. BRBC has donated over $500,000 since 2004 to cycling advocacy and education in Western North Carolina.

The Routes

There are four different routes available and each has been meticulously planned to ensure the most scenic and enjoyable ride possible. Riders will have their choice of a century, metric, half century, or half metric ride that winds through the valleys outside Asheville, North Carolina. While each course has moderate terrain considering the mountainous surroundings, there are plenty of rolling hills to keep all riders interested. There is beautiful scenery without the long mountain climbs. Whether you’re a first time rider or experienced cyclist, the WNC Flyer offers a fun and challenging course for all.

Post Ride Party!

The post-ride party at Oskar Blues is the ideal way to end a great day of riding. For ride participants, this is included with your registration. If you did not ride, you can still purchase a ticket to the post-party and enjoy the fun! The party includes a BBQ meal (veggie/vegan option available) and a craft beer from Oskar Blues. Kick back and relax with fellow riders with covered seating, live music by Blue Ridge Tradition, and giveaways from local sponsors.

In 2003 members of the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club decided an organized ride was needed in Western North Carolina that was flatter than the other rides held in the region but still retained the flavor of a mountain cycling event. Hence, The WNC Flyer was born. Since its conception, the event has grown from 216 riders to over 1,000, but the flavor of the event remains the same, one in which every level of cyclist can participate.

With its tradition and loyal following among regional cyclists, The Flyer provides one of the best sponsorship opportunities in Western North Carolina. 68% of the 2016 field came from North Carolina with 46% living within 50 miles of Asheville. 18% came from Georgia and South Carolina. The 2017 Flyer was voted the Best Road Cycling event in Western North Carolina by Mountain Express.

All event details can be found on our registration page. Simply click "register" on this page and you will be taken to Race Roster, our registration partner.

Once you register, we will remind you about important details prior to the race. We send an email and text message the week before the event. It will contain a link to our interactive event guide that has everything you need to know in one place.

EVENT RULES

FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS, THERE ARE RULES YOU MUST FOLLOW:

1. You must wear an approved helmet.

2. You must wear a WNC Flyer bib, with the number visible from the back.

3. You must pull off the road to let emergency vehicles pass.

4. Please do not wear headphones or otherwise impede your hearing.

5. Please do not have personal SAG vehicles on the course. Personal SAG involves any vehicle which is on the course specifically to give you support, such as providing water, food and clothing. There just isn’t enough room for additional vehicles.

6. Please obey the directions of Marshals, SAG Drivers, and Course EMTs:

a. Stop at intersections when directed to by a Marshal – they are for your safety and to aid you in crossing intersections. They are not there to stop cars.

b. Stop at a rest stop and do not continue riding the course… when directed to by a Marshal – there may be a problem ahead.

c. Obey any other instructions – this is for your safety and the safety of others.

7. The Event Director may halt the ride, delay the ride or prohibit any riders to proceed past a certain point due to severe weather, unsafe conditions or other emergencies. If it becomes necessary to delay or halt the ride, the Course Marshals will communicate this decision to you.

8. Please be polite, respectful, and calm with the public, whether on the bike, on foot, or in a vehicle – even if they are frustrated or verbal – please do not respond in kind. Hand gestures are not acceptable, no matter how “right” you may be.

STATE LAWS

IN NORTH CAROLINA BICYCLISTS HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS MOTOR VEHICLES. TRAFFIC LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED FOR CYCLISTS, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT MAY ISSUE CITATIONS TO RIDERS WHO BREAK THE LAW.

1. You must obey all traffic laws.

2. You must come to a full stop at stop signs, flashing red traffic lights, or other traffic control devices.

3. You cannot block traffic by taking up the entire lane.

4. You must allow vehicles behind you to pass you by forming into a single file.

5. You must stay on your side of the double-yellow line at all times.

6. When you hear sirens and see lights, you must pull over to the side of the road and stop to allow emergency vehicles behind you to pass safely.

SAFETY TIPS

1. Please be aware that there may be wildlife on the course. Riders in other events have been critically injured by wildlife suddenly entering the roadway. Please stay alert.

2. There may dogs on this course – not all property owners control their dogs.

3. SAG vehicles and course marshals are in vehicles with flags and/or flashing amber lights.

4. Marshals will be at each rest stop, wearing high visibility vests or orange caps. Any of these people can help you.

5. If you need non-emergency assistance, give a Thumbs Down to SAG vehicles.

6. In case of an emergency

call 9-1-1
and then SAG – Danny Rector: 828-329-8863

7. Your cell phone may not work in some locations as some of the course is beyond cell service.

8. SAG Vehicles and Rest Stops have Ham radios to report emergencies. Most Marshals can get help via Ham radio, so just ask.

SEVERE WEATHER

Thunderstorms with life-threatening lightning strikes are unavoidable in this part of the country. If you experience thunderstorm activity during your ride, it is up to you to evaluate the potential danger and take action.

Due to the unpredictable nature of weather, and a large course that may include severe weather in one part of the ride but no danger in other parts of the ride, it is the sole responsibility of each rider to determine the danger of the weather.

We recommend you follow this guidance from NOAA Weather Service:

If you can hear thunder, then you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Lightning strikes can be fatal.
Take shelter to protect yourself from a strike.
Remain in that sheltered position until you cannot hear the thunder for at least 30 minutes.
If caught outdoors and no shelter is nearby:
Find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles. Make sure the place you pick is not subject to flooding.
If you are in the woods, take shelter under the shorter trees.
If you feel your skin tingle or your hair stand on end, squat low to the ground and make yourself the smallest target possible.

Inclement Weather: In the event of dangerous weather conditions, the organizers reserve the right to cancel the ride. Entry fees are non-refundable and not able to be deferred to the next year.

TRANSFERS: All participants can transfer into the virtual version of their event up until the start of the event. Email support@idaph.net to request the transfer. There will be no refunds for the price difference between events. Transfers that occur within seven days of the event will cost $10.

Transfers between participants are prohibited. Participants who ride with another rider's bib will be automatically disqualified and bandits will be banned from future iDaph events.

REFUNDS: We have a small, but mighty team that is working on all the details to produce this event safely for you and everyone in our community in attendance. We are incurring the expenses for production well before the day of the event, and we will not be able to provide a refund to you should you want to cancel your registration, or if the event itself has to be canceled due to a change in the status of the pandemic, weather, an act of god, or other unforeseen circumstance.

CANCELLATION: In the event of an unforeseen circumstance, such as an emergency, an act of god, not receiving approval of final event permits or a change in public health guidelines that results in the inability to have an in-person event, we reserve the right to cancel the event and automatically convert all in-person registrations to the virtual option. Should this occur, your swag will be mailed to you free of charge.

DEFERRALS: We do not allow deferrals from race to race. If you're unable to make it on race day, you may switch to the virtual option.
