His cycling career was cut short by a somewhat rare condition that effects cyclists called endofibrosis of the external Illiac artery. Because of the medical community’s unfamilarity with the diagnosis at the time and the refusal of insurance to cover treatment, Heath took a few years off and focused on other pursuits. Cycling or competition was never far away from his heart or mind.
Heath took up running for aerobic conditioning and eventually, with some encouragement from friends entered a triathlon. From that point on he was hooked. A surgery to attempt to correct the vascular issue was largely successful, and Heath has since gone on to be one of the top Age Group triathletes in the region. In 2010, Heath earned a place on Team USA for the 2011 ITU Long Course Worlds. Heath still occasionally competes regionally as a cyclist and is a rider/mentor for the Industry Nine Grassroots Team based out of Asheville.
Heath was an early adopter of training with power beginning in 1995 with a Computrainer. He owned one of the first Powertaps, then known as eTune, and has been using and analyzing data with an SRM since 2001. This knowledge and experience is invaluable when it comes to helping you reach your full potential high definition performance.
