Marlee’s Milestone: The High Schooler Who Fell in Love with Half Marathons
If you’re like us, learning about someone’s running journey never gets old. We love the transformative and inspiring power this sport has had for so many people. There’s something compelling about taking on a challenge that feels just a little out of reach. For Marlee, a high school cross-country runner, that challenge was her first-ever half marathon, and it became an unforgettable journey of growth, excitement, and accomplishment.
"The summer of my high school year was a little nerve-racking, so I decided to go into it with something big."
Marlee’s story begins with a mix of nerves and anticipation. It’s not unusual for big life changes—like the transition from middle school to high school—to stir up a bit of anxiety. But instead of letting that anxiety take over, Marlee chose to channel her energy into something positive. She decided to tackle a new kind of race—a half marathon.
"I run cross country for the high school, so I’m a big runner and I love to run."
Running wasn’t new to Marlee. She was already a seasoned runner, competing in cross-country for her school. But like many of us who love to push our limits, she was looking for something more—a goal that would challenge her in a new way.
"I started thinking about running something bigger than a 5K but not quite a marathon. I came to the conclusion that a half marathon would be fun!"
For anyone who’s ever considered stepping up from a 5K, a half marathon might seem like a huge leap. But for Marlee, the idea of running 13.1 miles was the perfect middle ground. It was a way to test her endurance and see what she was capable of.
"I started training about 6 weeks out, and it was crazy—my long runs were climbing the charts, and I was feeling good."
With just six weeks to train, Marlee dove into her new goal with determination. As her training progressed, so did her confidence. Every long run brought her closer to race day and closer to proving to herself that she could conquer this challenge. When it came time to choose her race, Marlee stayed local. The RAD Half Marathon in Asheville offered the perfect setting for her first half marathon experience. With its beautiful course and supportive community, it was an easy choice.
"It was one of the best experiences ever—I was one of the youngest people to run it (I was 14 at the time) and I just have loved half marathons after that."
Race day arrived, and Marlee’s nerves turned into excitement as she hit the pavement. At just 14 years old, she was one of the youngest participants in the race, but that didn’t stop her from giving it her all. The sense of accomplishment she felt crossing the finish line was so rewarding. She was hooked and like so many race participants, she couldn’t wait to get the next race on her calendar.
"I ran one this year too, and I am now 15 and was still one of the youngest people there!"
A year later, Marlee was back at it, taking on another half marathon at age 15. Her love for the sport had only grown, and she continued to be one of the youngest runners on the course—a testament to her passion and dedication.
"I highly recommend a half if you are looking for something bigger—it’s super fun, and it’s just an amazing experience."
Marlee’s advice is simple and inspiring: If you’re looking for a new challenge, a half marathon might be just what you need. It’s not just about the miles—it’s about the experience, the community, and the pride that comes from pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.
